CD Review: "Feet Back in the Door" - Johnny Ray Jones

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

I I I I  L L Love the Ph Ph Ph Phantom Blues Band! Here we have Tony Braunagel on drums and Johnny Lee Schell on guitar, Mike Finnigan on organ and piano. It was recorded in Johnny Lee Schell’s studio and he engineered it. He also co-produced with Tony and Johnny Ray Jones, th th the g g guy singing on here. This cd has mostly covers with one song being credited to Mr. Jones. Besides the Phantom boys, Coco Montoya plays lead on one song and the Texicali horns are present on six. While this is a recent recording, one track, Hole in Your Soul, was recorded in 1995 when he Braunagel and Schell were in a band together.

I know you’ve heard folks do an Elvis impersonation with a fast little stutter in the voice, “H H Hey B B Baby”. Johnny Ray Jones incorporates that in his singing style. He covers the Allen Toussaint penned A Certain Girl that you know. When the singer announces that there’s a certain girl he’s been in love with for a long, long time, the background singers inquire, “What’s her name?” to which he responds, “I can’t tell ya.” You know that one. That’s the one I used for the link.

The last number is a Leon Russell tune and Finnigan plays a great master of space and time piano. The cd is packed with these great musicians, but its centered and focused on the vocals of Johnny Ray Jones.
